Install Tallycon and connect it to Tally
What you need
| Tally | TallyPrime, running with the company open. Tallycon is tested on TallyPrime 7.1; releases from 3.0 should work. Tally.ERP 9 works with limits, and Tallycon says which. |
| A computer for Tallycon | Windows 10 or later, or a Mac. It can be the Tally computer or any other computer on the same office network. |
| An AI key | An Anthropic API key, unless your copy came with one built in. |
If the Tally computer runs Windows 7, Tallycon does not run on it. Install Tallycon on another computer on the office network and point it at that Tally; this is how Tallycon runs in offices whose Tally computer stays on Windows 7.
Set up Tally
Tallycon reads Tally over Tally's own port on the office network. In TallyPrime, press F1 and go to Settings, Connectivity. Set TallyPrime acts as to Both, and the port to 9000.
If Tallycon will run on another computer, allow port 9000 through the Tally computer's firewall for the office network. Do not open it to the internet: the port has no password. For reading the books from outside the office, use remote access instead.
Tallycon only reads. It checks every request it sends to Tally against a fixed list of read requests and has no way to post, alter or import a voucher.
Install on Windows
- Run the installer we sent you,
Tallycon-Setup-<version>-x64.exe. It installs for you alone and does not ask for administrator rights. - Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", because our builds are not code-signed yet. Choose More info, check that the app is Tallycon, then Run anyway.
- Open Tallycon from the Start menu.
Install on a Mac
Open the disk image for your Mac (Apple silicon or Intel) and drag Tallycon to Applications.
The build is not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS refuses to open a downloaded copy. Open Terminal once and run:
xattr -cr /Applications/Tallycon.appOpen Tallycon from Applications.
Connect to Tally
Open Settings, Tally. Tallycon connects on its own when it can: on a computer where Tally runs it reads localhost, and on first launch, if exactly one Tally answers on the office network, it connects to that one.
Otherwise:
- Find Tally looks for Tally on your office network, which takes a few seconds, and lists each one it finds with its open company. Choose Add beside the one you want.
- Add Tally takes an address you type, such as
192.168.1.20, and the port, 9000 unless you changed it in Tally.
When Tallycon is connected, the status bar at the bottom shows the company it is reading. Give each Tally a name you will recognise, such as "Sharma Traders", in the box Tallycon offers beside it; Tallycon remembers every Tally you add and connects to the one in use each time it opens.
Find Tally may find more than one Tally in the office. Check the company it shows before you choose.
Pick the company and the year
Tallycon reads whichever company is open in Tally when it connects. Every company loaded in Tally is in the status bar's company list; picking one there switches Tallycon to it without changing anything in Tally. A company that is not loaded in Tally cannot be read, so load it in Tally first.
If your books are split into a company per financial year ("Sharma Traders 2025-26", "Sharma Traders 2026-27"), load the years you want to ask about. Tallycon treats them as one business and reads each question's dates from the year that holds them. A question across two years is answered year by year, because each year opens with the previous one's closing balances.
Add the AI key
Open Settings, Account. Under AI key, paste your Anthropic API key and choose Save key. The key is stored on this computer, encrypted with the system keychain, and sent only to Anthropic. If the card says Built-in key, your copy came with one and you can skip this.
If Tallycon does not connect
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Not connected | TallyPrime is open with a company loaded, and Connectivity is set as above |
| Tally on another computer is not found | Both computers are on the same network, and port 9000 is allowed through the Tally computer's firewall |
| The status bar names a caution about your Tally release | Your release is older than TallyPrime 3.0, or Tally.ERP 9; Tallycon reads it, and the caution says what it cannot do there |
| A company you expect is missing | It is not loaded in Tally; load it there |
